Aurora Green Fest, the Fox Valley’s newest sustainability event, is coming to the Prisco Community Center, Saturday, June 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.   This year the Green Fest will help the environment with big recycling opportunities right in the Prisco parking lot:
  • Electronic Recycling—Get  Green, a new recycling company in Aurora, will be doing electronic recycling.  This is a very popular event, and means that you can get of old computers, printers, and fax machines out of your basement and attic.  For details on what they will be accepting, please call Get Green at 630-264-2400.
  • Styrofoam Recycling—Dart Container Corporation will have a 25’ long truck there to accept Styrofoam.  All of those big blocks of Styrofoam that come with a stereo or TV set can be sent into the recycling stream, not the landfill.
  • Battery Recycling—Batteries Plus #434 will be taking all kinds of batteries, even car batteries.  This is a very important recycling effort, because keeping dead batteries out of landfills reduces the risk of ground water contamination from leaked battery acid.
  • Medication Take-back—Fox Metro Water Reclamation District is offering a medication take-back.  This is for old meds that you no longer need.  Please do not flush unwanted medications down the toilet.  This is a terrible form of water pollution, and it’s easy to bring your old medicine to the Fox Metro booth inside, and enjoy the Aurora Green Fest at the same time.  No controlled substances, please.
The Aurora Green Fest is a free event and also includes eco-businesses, environmental non-profits, demonstrations,  speakers, kids’ activities, 3D art from recycled materials, music, and food.  Other highlights Include:
  • Urban Green Living Tips – practical tips for everyday green living in Aurora, from how to energy audit your home to how to tune-up your bike.
  • 3D Sculptural Art Exhibit — FRAMA, Fox River Art and Music Academy, sponsors our Environmental Art Exhibit.  Art will be 3D sculptures made from recycled objects.
  • Outdoor Nature Activities – nature walks with local nature and birding experts and Spin Cast Reel Fly Fishing.
  • Gardening and Landscaping Features – organic vegetable gardening, landscaping with native plants, water erosion management, rain barrels, and worm composting.
  • Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency --  solar, wind, and geo-thermal energy.

“Our goal is to motivate our citizens to make environmentally friendly choices in their lives, and to give them some ideas and tools for how to do just that”, says Aurora Green Lights chairman, Mavis Bates.
Aurora’s Green Fest is presented by Aurora Green Lights, in affiliation with the Conservation Foundation.  Aurora Green Lights is an independent, non-profit citizens’ group, with a mission to promote sustainable living in the Greater Aurora Area. Click http:/auroragreenlights.org for more info.
